Journalism Schemes

Journalism schemes offer an exciting career path. It does differ from other sectors though, as many opportunities come in the form of short internships. 


We have, however, done our best to collate some leading journalism graduate schemes, from publishing for the UK's leading newspapers, to working with UK broadcasters.

Journalism Schemes

BBC

Salary: £21,216, £25,898 (if based in London)  

Industry: Broadcasting

Duration: 10 months to 1 year 

Location:  See below

Requirements: Not mentioned. Extend in news is a scheme designed for those with a hidden or visible disability. 


The BBC offer a wide range of graduate schemes. In terms of journalism schemes they offer roles under the name:


  • Journalism (London, Salford or Cardiff)
  • Journalism (Scotland- Orkney or Shetland ) 
  • Journalism (Wales - Wales - Llundain or Cardiff) 
  • Extend in news (1 year, UK wide) 
  • Production (London or Birmingham)

The Telegraph

Salary: Not mentioned

Industry: Publishing

Duration: 2 years

Location: London

Requirements: Degree and three pieces of work you want them to see.  


The Telegraph are offering a unique graduate scheme which provides top training with some of their leading journalists. You will cover everything from business, to sport.


  • Editorial Graduate Program

Graduate schemes such as this offer a fantastic route into breaking into journalism. Journalism schemes are difficult to come by, so make sure to apply to The Telegraph if you're serious about this career path!

Channel 4

Salary: Not mentioned   

Industry: Broadcasting

Duration: 1 year - 2 years

Location:  Uk wide

Requirements: See below


Channel 4 offer three graduate schemes. The journalism schemes they offer are:


  • Investigative journalism - Requires one year's professional experience, but doesn't have to be in TV. 
  • Production training scheme - Primarily aimed for disabled, BAME or disadvantaged backgrounds. Lasts 1 year.

Financial Times

Salary: Competitive 

Industry: Publishing

Duration: 18 months to 2 years 

Location: Not mentioned 

Requirements: Degree and completed their editorial apprenticeship. Details about this can be found here. 


The Financial Times is alter how many graduate schemes they offer. Currently, they are offering the following journalism graduate scheme:


  • Paul McClean Graduate Trainee Programme - this has been named after one of FT's most promising trainees, who sadly passed away.

Journalism schemes with newspapers aren't always easy to come by, so make sure to apply if this is an area you see yourself working in!

ITV

Salary: £24,116, £26,660 (London) 

Industry: Broadcasting 

Duration: 9 months

Location: Norwich, Birmingham, Salford, Southampton, Gateshead, Bristol, Leeds, London, Cardiff, Belfast or  St Helier  

Requirements: 'Interest in journalism' - you must be able to demonstrate this in your application. 


ITV are offering the following journalism graduate traineeship:


  • News traineeship

Although ITV aren't offering traditional graduate schemes, or even journalism schemes, their traineeships are still worth checking out.

Sky

Salary: Not mentioned

Industry: Telecommunications

Duration: 2 years

Location: London

Requirements: 5 GCSE's and 2 A levels.


Although this isn't part of Sky's graduate schemes, Sky do offer three media based apprenticeships perfect for entering the world of journalism which we wanted to include. They are: 


  • Sky news 
  • Sky news reporter 
  • Sky sports news

Journalism schemes are difficult to come by and so, entering the industry with these experiences would certainly set you up well.
